An oblique pen holder is almost a mandatory tool for calligraphers working in slanted scripts like Spencerian and Copperplate, because it holds the dip pen nib at a 55° angle just as these 19th-century writing systems require. Oblique holders are also commonly used by left-handed writers, who can use the pen’s angled tip to avoid dragging their hands through wet ink.
